Early literacy encompasses the skills that children begin developing at birth that prepare them to read and write. Children first develop language and motor skills before entering school that prepare them for success. The current research on literacy and school readiness indicates that a wide range of skills, including executive function and early math play an important part in a child’s school readiness. Early literacy continues to develop in the early elementary years as children progress from learning to read to reading to learn.

Libraries support children and families through the materials, programs, and activities we provide. Knowledgeable staff and intentional programming ensures that all children have access to quality early learning experiences.
